Potato Seedlings Now Available.

We have 3 varieties available ; Shangi , Unica and Wanjiku.

Shangi

Unica

Wanjiku

  • Origin & Popularity: Developed by KALRO and widely dominant in Kenya, Shangi commands over 80% market share.
  • Maturity & Cropping Cycle: Very early maturing, ready in 75–90 days enabling up to three harvests per year. Its short dormancy allows for quick replanting just a few weeks after harvest.
  • Appearance & Cooking Qualities: Oval, medium-sized tubers with smooth cream skin, shallow to medium pink eyes, and firm white flesh. Great for mashing, boiling, frying and chipping.
  • Yield & Susceptibility: Delivers around 30–40 t/ha.
  • Why Farmers Love It: Quick returns, multitasking in the kitchen, and reliable demand make Shangi extremely popular, even when other varieties may outperform it on paper.
  • Background: Bred by CIP in Peru and introduced to Kenya in 2016, Unica is now a climate-smart favorite among many producers.
  • Performance: Matures quickly (about 3 months), delivers high yields exceeding 40 t/ha, and adapts well to varied conditions, including both highland and lowland, rainy and dry areas.
  • Disease Resistance & Nutrition: Moderately resistant to late blight; highly resistant to viruses like PVX and PLRV. Nutritionally rich (vitamin C, iron, zinc).
  • Culinary Qualities: Red-skinned with cream flesh; prized for chips and crisps for its texture, flavor, and appearance.
  • On-Farm Advantages: Known for drought tolerance and long storage life (up to six months), making it attractive for processors and farmers aiming for robust returns.
  • Development & Traits: Bred by KALRO and released in 2016. Tubers are oval to elongated, with light brown to reddish-brown skin, creamy white flesh, and a firm, waxy texture.
  • Yield & Adaptability: High yield potential and adaptable across Kenya’s agro-ecological zones.
  • Disease Resistance: Resistant to late blight and bacterial wilt, offering better resilience than Shangi.
  • Culinary & Storage: Versatile in cooking (boiling, roasting, frying) and stores well post-harvest.
  • Agronomic Advantages: Research shows Wanjiku produces more medium and large-sized tubers and has a higher number of “eyes” (potential sprouting points) compared to other varieties; key for seed quality and yield.
